NASCAR Cup Series: Jimmie Johnson takes pole for 2019 O’Reilly Auto Parts 500

Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson took his first pole position of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season and his first pole position in the last 96 races by taking the pole position for the season’s seventh race, the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500, at Texas Motor Speedway.

Prior to taking the pole position for this race, Johnson’s most recent pole position was his pole position for the July race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the 2016 season.

Johnson took the pole position for the 334-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) high-banked Texas Motor Speedway oval in Fort Worth, Texas by recording a top lap time of 28.588 seconds (188.890 miles per hour) in his #48 Chevrolet in the third and final round of qualifying for the race.

Johnson led a top three Chevrolet sweep, specifically a top three Hendrick Motorsports sweep, on the speed chart in this third and final round of qualifying for the race, as William Byron and Chase Elliott qualified in second and third place in their #24 Chevrolet and #9 Chevrolet, respectively.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Daniel Suarez was the highest qualifying Ford driver for the race. He qualified in fourth place in his #41 Ford. Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon qualified in fifth in his #3 Chevrolet. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin was the highest qualifying Toyota driver for the race. He qualified in sixth in his #11 Toyota.

Richard Childress Racing rookie Daniel Hemric, Team Penske’s Joey Logano, Germain Racing’s Ty Dillon and Richard Petty Motorsport’ Darrell Wallace Jr. qualified in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #8 Chevrolet, #22 Ford, #13 Chevrolet and #43 Chevrolet, giving Chevrolet drivers an impressive seven of the top 10 positions on the starting grid for this race.

NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series drivers at Martinsville Speedway

It's time for some short track racing as the NASCAR Cup series heads to Martinsville Speedway on Sunday afternoon. Kyle Busch is a heavy favorite -- at least in the motorsports world -- at +160 after winning the past two Cup Series races.

Busch tied Richard Petty with his 200th career NASCAR win last week (albeit spread across three series compared to Petty's all coming in in the Cup series) and there's a good chance he'll get No. 201 this weekend. The No. 18 driver won races at Martinsville in two of the past three seasons and has led 937 total laps in his past seven appearances there.

The reigning STP 500 champion however is Clint Bowyer, who punched his ticket to the NASCAR Cup series playoffs last season by winning this race after leading a race-high 215 laps and holding off Busch. Bowyer is listed at +1000 to repeat while the other two dominant cars from last year's race -- Ryan Blaney (145 laps led) and Denny Hamlin (111 laps led) --  are +2000 and +1000 respectively.

As for the last driver to find Victory Lane at The Paperclip, Joey Logano, he's +700 to win the race. Remember, the reigning Cup Series champion made a critical last second pass last season to punch his ticket to the Championship 4. Not to mention Logano has four top 10s including a win and runner-up finish in five races this season.

If you're looking for some value, two drivers named Ryan are the play. Ryan Newman is +8000 to win the race while Ryan Preece is a staggering +50000. Newman is a previous Martinsville winner and pulled off a top 10 finish last season. At the very least he would be a strong play in DFS.

As for Preece, he lives, sleeps and breathes short-track racing. The No. 47 driver has dominated in NASCAR modifieds and knows how to navigate through a crowded field. Multiple notable industry members in NASCAR have told CBS Sports that Preece is expected not only to finish his first career race at Martinsville but could very well win it.

Our Pick: Kyle Busch
Rowdy is the favorite for a reason and is clearly the top driver in the field right now. Unless he finds himself wrecked or suffers a major engine issue, Busch will have no problem running towards the front of the field all day long.

Last season, Kevin Harvick and Busch were on the same playing field when it came to winning races, but it's clear that Harvick's team has not figured that out yet. Vegas took that into account making Busch a heavy favorite, which is a huge reason you should ride him to the finish line.

Bold predictions for 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season

Zack Albert: All four Hendrick Motorsports drivers will win a race this season. Chase Elliott continues his winning ways after a successful second half of 2018, and Jimmie Johnson returns to form. And if Hendrick Motorsports adapts as quickly to the new rules package as it should, don’t be surprised if Alex Bowman and William Byron join the ranks of first-time winners this year.

Pat DeCola: William Byron will have at least as many Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series wins as Kyle Larson in 2019. And possibly more.

Torey Fox: Denny Hamlin will make the Championship 4. With all the talk surrounding Martin Truex Jr.’s move to JGR as well as Kyle Busch’s hunt for a second title, some have forgotten that Denny Hamlin won a race every year from 2006-17 and nearly won a championship in 2010. The point? Hamlin can drive. Chris Gabehart re-energizes the No. 11 team and Hamlin establishes himself as a title favorite by winning at Martinsville in October to clinch his second berth into the Championship 4.

Marissa Fuller: Jimmie Johnson will win his eighth championship this year.

RJ Kraft: Alex Bowman will be the first of the Hendrick drivers to win a points-paying event in 2019.

Jonathan Merryman: After a miserable 2018 season, Hendrick Motorsports gets all of its drivers to Victory Lane before any other team.

Brad Norman: Another Team Penske driver makes the Championship 4 following a hot run in the NASCAR Playoffs. It’s not Joey Logano … and it’s not 2012 champion Brad Keselowski. No, it’s Ryan Blaney, who wins at both Talladega and Martinsville to set up a title push in Miami.

Tyler Strong: Erik Jones will win at least three races this year and make the Round of 8. He had an impressive streak of finishes last summer (including his first win) and was carrying serious momentum into the NASCAR Playoffs before being derailed by two sub-30 finishes.

Chase Wilhelm: Chase Elliott wins the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship. Last year he earned two victories in the NASCAR Playoffs Round of 12, which shows he can win under the postseason pressure. Another season of experience launches him into the Championship 4, hoisting the big trophy at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

George Winkler: Daniel Hemric will show consistency similar to what he enjoyed in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and that will be enough to edge out Richard Childress Racing teammate Austin Dillon and Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman for the final playoff spot in 2019.

The 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is underway, and defending champion Joey Logano holds a small points lead after his first victory of the season at Las Vegas on Sunday. The regular season will stretch until mid-September, with the first playoff race of the year scheduled for September 15th in Las Vegas.

Here is the full race schedule for 2019. Races will be broadcast on FOX and FS1 for the first half of the year before shifting to NBC and NBCSN for the second half.

2019 Pennzoil 400 Vegas picks and NASCAR predictions: Fade Kyle Busch, back Clint Bowyer at Las Vegas

It's a huge week of sports in Las Vegas. On Thursday, the Las Vegas Golden Knights beat Florida, 6-5 in a shootout. On Saturday, Jon Jones triumphed at UFC 235 at T-Mobile Arena. On Sunday, NASCAR at Las Vegas takes center stage with the 2019 Pennzoil 400. The green flag will wave at 3:30 p.m. ET at a track located about 15 miles from many of the world's biggest sportsbooks.

Professional and amateur bettors alike have had plenty of time to digest the latest 2019 Pennzoil 400 odds while they've been making picks on hockey, MMA, and much more. For Sunday, Kevin Harvick is the favorite at 9-2 and earned the pole in qualifying, but with five other drivers going off at 8-1 or shorter 2019 NASCAR at Las Vegas odds, picking a winner could be difficult without advice from a qualified expert.

Before locking in any 2019 Pennzoil 400 picks of your own, read the top NASCAR predictions from SportsLine's Micah Roberts, a legendary Vegas bookmaker who was one of the first to provide expanded NASCAR odds. He pioneered wagering on racing and now makes his NASCAR picks at SportsLine.

Roberts went with Jimmie Johnson as a hefty 25-1 long shot at the season-opening Advance Auto Parts Clash. The result: Johnson survived a huge crash and went on to win the rain-shortened race as Roberts' followers raked it in. He entered the 2019 NASCAR season after finishing big-time in the black in 2018. Those who wagered $100 on each of his picks last year have $1,750 in profit to show for it.

His biggest wins came when he went against the grain, taking Keselowski at 12-1 to win the South Point 400 at Las Vegas in the opening race of the NASCAR playoffs and going with Joey Logano, also 12-1, to take the First Data 500 at Martinsville. He also nailed four of Harvick's nine series victories and three of Busch's nine wins.

That continued an astonishing run in which Roberts picked nine of the 10 winners in the 2017 NASCAR playoffs. In 2016, he took Denny Hamlin to win the Daytona 500 at 15-1 and took him again at 40-1 at Watkins Glen later that year. Anyone who's following his picks is up huge year after year.

Now, he has analyzed Sunday's 2019 Pennzoil 400 lineup from every possible angle and locked in his 2019 NASCAR at Las Vegas picks. He predicted Harvick to win last year's Pennzoil 400, so you'll want to see what he has to say.

We can tell you Roberts is fading Kyle Busch, one of the top Vegas favorites. Las Vegas Motor Speedway is his home track, but he's had just one win there in 15 Cup starts, and that was a decade ago. There are far better values in a loaded 2019 Pennzoil 400 field than the 5-1 premium he's commanding.

One shocker: Roberts is high on Clint Bowyer, a long shot who's listed at 20-1 NASCAR at Las Vegas odds. Bowyer has just one top-10 finish in his seven starts at Las Vegas, but Roberts is eyeing his upside this year as he looks to buck that trend.

"He was the tester at Las Vegas last month for Stewart-Haas Racing and came right off the gate with an amazing weekend in the new package at Atlanta because of the testing," Roberts told SportsLine. "He was fastest in both practices last week and finished fifth after starting third. His total is set at 9.5. He offers plenty of value given his 2019 Pennzoil 400 odds."

Bowyer will start 17th at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and finished second in one of the Duels at Daytona this season after beginning in fourth. In his two wins at Martinsville and Michigan last season, he started ninth and 12th, respectively.

Roberts also says two other drivers with 2019 Pennzoil 400 odds of 20-1 or longer will make a strong run at the checkered flag. His picks will shock many, but anyone who backs them could hit it with a massive payday, just like in the season opener.

Hendrick Motorsports teammates Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott closed out the third and final qualifying session for the third race of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season, the Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in first and second place, respectively, on the speed chart.

But the lap before they recorded the lap times that sent them to first and second place, both drivers just barely missed getting to the timing line before the clock hit 0:00.

As a result, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick took the pole position for the 267-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) high-banked Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada. He did so by recording a top lap time of 29.914 seconds (180.517 miles per hour) in his #4 Ford in the race’s third and final qualifying session.

Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch were the highest qualifying Toyota drivers for the race. They qualified in second and third place in their #11 Toyota and #18 Toyota, respectively.

Richard Childress Racing teammate Austin Dillon and Daniel Hemric, a rookie, were the highest qualifying Chevrolet drivers for the race. They qualified in fourth and fifth place in their #3 Chevrolet and #8 Chevrolet, respectively.

Front Row Motorsports’ David Ragan qualified for the race in sixth place in his #38 Ford. He has not started a Cup Series race in the top six since he started in fifth in the September race at Richmond Raceway in the 2015 season when he was driving for Michael Waltrip Racing.
