Consumers Energy 400 (Michigan) Preview and Fantasy Predictions

Can Team Penske resume their winning ways?

The last time the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series was out in Michigan International Speedway, Team Penske dominated the proceedings. Joey Logano led 163 laps from the pole in a dominating performance as Ford's top team was simply on top of their game.

But in the past two months, Ford's fast start has fallen off heading into this weekend's Consumers Energy 400. They've won just once, with Kevin Harvick of Stewart-Haas Racing, while the trio of drivers at Penske have found themselves shut out of victory lane.

It's not like Logano, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney are running all that badly. But in a system that rewards winning, no trips to victory lane mean no additional playoff points to use come September. Joe Gibbs Racing has filled in the void; their drivers have three of the top four playoff point totals with Keselowski sneaking in between them at 19.

Michigan is Keselowski's hometown track and he starts from the pole this weekend, hoping to get over the hump and finally earn a win here. He seemed to be the strongest Penske driver at the start of the year, winning three times in the first 12 races, but his speed has simply tapered off as of late. Just one top-5 finish and 21 laps led in the last eight races have him threatening to fall off the top tier of championship contenders.

Logano, the reigning series champ, has earned the benefit of the doubt despite a few recent shaky performances. He's got no top-five finishes in the last five races and a pedestrian average finish of 15.4.

In fact, of the Penske trio, it's Blaney who's had a surge in recent performance as of late. Two top-five runs in the past three races have all but secured his postseason bid during a winless season. But Blaney's also been the center of controversy after Jimmie Johnson went off on him following contact at Watkins Glen. The issue has remained front-and-center this weekend when Johnson revealed Blaney never called him during the week to apologize; Blaney, for his part, doesn't feel like he has anything to apologize for.

But stubbornness on Blaney's part might simply come back to bite him in the end. Johnson, the seven-time series champion, rarely has been this fired up against another competitor in his NASCAR career and feels slighted. That leaves Blaney in a precarious position as on-track retribution could come at any time.

Now, if there's anything we've learned with NASCAR's playoff system it's that you can slump in the summertime only to bounce back when it matters most. Logano went from Charlotte on Memorial Day weekend last year to Michigan in August without so much as a top-five finish; by November, he was a Cup Series champion. So Penske still has time to fix their program.

But their slumber needs to end at some point if they're truly going to reassert themselves as championship favorites against the four-car powerhouse over at JGR. Another dominating performance at Michigan, held in Ford Motor Company's own backyard, would be the perfect place to start their rebound.

Who's at the Front: Martin Truex Jr.
Sure, Chase Elliott impressed with wins in back-to-back years at Watkins Glen International. It's the first time anyone's done that since Marcos Ambrose in 2011-12. But Elliott's also suffered through a trio of DNFs the past few months.

Instead, it's Truex, the runner-up finisher, who's kept more consistent while extending a remarkable track record on road courses. He now has five straight top-two finishes at Sonoma and Watkins Glen and would have earned a win at the Charlotte Roval last year until contact with Johnson entering the final turn.

Who's at the Back: Bubba Wallace
Wallace may have spun out Kyle Busch at Watkins Glen, causing the stands to erupt in cheers but it did little to advance a sputtering Cup career. He's just one of three full-time drivers who haven't led a lap all season and remains without a top-10 finish.

A 28th-place run at the Glen was his fourth straight outside the top 20. In fact, when you remove Daytona and Talladega from the schedule, Wallace hasn't run 20th or better since Bristol way back in the spring.

News Briefs
Austin Dillon and Daniel Hemric had their qualifying times disallowed Friday at Michigan. NASCAR discovered unapproved alternators on their cars which led to them starting Sunday's race from the rear of the field. Both drivers' crew chiefs were fined $25,000 while each of them lost 10 driver points. Both Dillon and Hemric are well outside postseason contention, though and need a win to make the playoffs.

2019 NASCAR at Watkins Glen picks, predictions: Fade Chase Elliott, back Clint Bowyer at Go Bowling at The Glen

The race to the NASCAR Playoffs is heating up, with just five races left in the Cup Series regular season. Only seven of the 16 playoff spots are still up for grabs, with automatic berths for each race winner, and the NASCAR playoff field is filling up fast. The last eight races have been won by seven different drivers, including three at 25-1 or higher odds. On Sunday, the series heads to the tricky road course of Watkins Glen International for the 2019 Go Bowling at The Glen, where seven drivers have won the last seven trips to the historic New York track. Several drivers stand out as strong favorites in the latest 2019 Go Bowling at The Glen odds: four-time 2019 Cup winners Kyle Busch (2-1), Martin Truex Jr. (7-2), and Chase Elliott (4-1) lead the group, while Denny Hamlin is listed at 9-1. With so many contenders, you'll want to see the latest NASCAR at Watkins Glen picks and predictions from handicapper Micah Roberts, the legendary Vegas bookmaker who pioneered wagering on racing, before laying any 2019 Go Bowling at The Glen picks of your own.

Those who have wagered $100 on Roberts' picks for each of the 25 NASCAR races in 2019 are already up $1,200. In fact, those who put down $50 on Roberts' top-four leaderboard picks are up $2,000 on the year, buoyed by Alex Bowman's big win at Chicago at 30-1 odds. He hit with Hamlin at 10-1 at Pocono last week.

Roberts got off to a blazing start this year with Jimmie Johnson as a hefty 25-1 long shot at the Advance Auto Parts Clash. The result: Johnson survived a huge crash and went on to win the rain-shortened race as Roberts' followers raked it in. At the TicketGuardian 500, Roberts nailed Busch at 4-1 over the heavily favored Kevin Harvick, and at Dover he hit Truex at 8-1. Truex won the race despite starting at the back of the field.

Roberts' top 20 leaderboard has been on top of it, too. At the TicketGuardian 500, he nailed an eye-popping eight of the top 10. At the Auto Club 400, he got nine of the top 10 correct.

Roberts entered the 2019 NASCAR season after finishing big-time in the black in 2018, with $1,750 in profit for $100 players. His biggest wins came when he went against the grain, taking Brad Keselowski at 12-1 to win the South Point 400 at Las Vegas in the opening race of the NASCAR playoffs and going with Joey Logano, also 12-1, to take the First Data 500 at Martinsville. He also nailed four of Harvick's nine series victories and three of Busch's nine wins. Anyone who's following his picks is up huge year after year.

Now, Roberts has analyzed Sunday's NASCAR at Watkins Glen 2019 lineup. His winning pick and leaderboard are available at SportsLine.

One shocker: We can tell you that Roberts is fading Elliott, one of the top contenders at 4-1 NASCAR at Watkins Glen odds. In fact, Roberts says Elliott barely cracks the top 10 even though he earned the pole during qualifying.

Last year, Elliott was a road-course master, winning the race at Watkins Glen while taking fourth at Sonoma and sixth at the Charlotte Roval. Engine trouble ended his race at Sonoma this year (37th), and he's in a bit of a slump. Overall, after finishing in the top five all but once over a six-race stretch, he hasn't made the top 10 since finishing fourth at Pocono two months ago. He's also failed to lead a lap in his last three starts.

"Elliott needs a boost because he doesn't have a top-10 finish in his last seven starts on the NASCAR schedule, finishing 20th or worse five times over that span," Roberts told SportsLine. "There are better contenders on the board at higher odds."

Another surprise: Roberts is high on Clint Bowyer, a long shot at 25-1 NASCAR at Watkins Glen odds who still has to play his way into the NASCAR Playoffs.

Watkins Glen may be a prime spot for that win. Bowyer has just one victory on a road course -- at Sonoma in 2012 -- but he's been a contender on them the last two-plus years, finishing third, 11th, third, fifth and second in his last five road races.

"He's been in the hunt for a win in almost all the road races since his Sonoma win in 2012," Roberts said. "His 11 top-five finishes on road courses are tied for the most among active drivers. He still needs that win to get into the playoffs. If he's close at the end, he'll go for it."

Roberts is also high on another driver with double-digit odds who has run well at this track and those similar to Watkins Glen. He's heating up at the perfect time, and Roberts says Sunday could be his day. Anyone who backs this driver could hit it big.

Gander RV 400 odds, picks 2019: Proven NASCAR model says Chase Elliott surprises at Pocono

Kyle Busch has won the Gander RV 400 two straight years at Pocono Raceway. On Sunday, the 2019 Gander RV 400 will mark the second race this season at "The Tricky Triangle," and this time there are just six events remaining before the NASCAR Playoffs begin. Bubble drivers like Jimmie Johnson (50-1), Clint Bowyer (25-1), Ryan Newman (100-1) and Daniel Suarez (40-1) are all badly in need of a strong finish or checkered flag at NASCAR at Pocono 2019 to bolster their chances of making the final 16. However, it's Busch who is installed as the 5-2 favorite in the latest 2019 Gander RV 400 odds. Busch is second in the Cup standings and owns four wins this season, but has finished outside the top 10 in two of his last four races. Before you make any NASCAR at Pocono predictions, see the 2019 Gander RV 400 picks from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

Developed by DFS pro and SportsLine predictive data engineer Mike McClure, this proprietary NASCAR prediction computer model simulates every race 10,000 times, taking factors such as track history and recent results into account.

The model is off to an extremely strong start in NASCAR this year. It correctly predicted Martin Truex Jr.'s victory at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 in Sonoma. It also called Daytona 500 champion Denny Hamlin a top-four contender from the start. It nailed eight of the top 10 drivers at the Pennzoil 400, which included putting Joey Logano, who won the race, in its projected top five. Additionally, it had Coca-Cola 600 winner Truex in its top two and then nailed Kyle Busch's huge win at Pocono.

It also made some huge calls last year, including correctly projecting wins for Busch at Chicago and Truex at Sonoma. It also nailed three of the top four finishers at Michigan and two of the top four at the Daytona 500. Anybody who has followed its picks is way up.

McClure, who has a mechanical engineering degree, grew up around race tracks. Big events at venues like Pocono Raceway are in his blood. Now, his model simulated the NASCAR at Pocono 10,000 times and the results were surprising.

For NASCAR at Pocono 2019, we can tell you the model is high on Chase Elliott, who makes a strong run at the checkered flag despite going off as a 16-1 long shot. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

Elliott won at Talladega earlier this year, which began a stretch of five consecutive top-five finishes that drove him as high as third in the NASCAR standings. However, he's had a tough stretch recently and has fallen back to eighth.

The good news is that the points reset when the 2019 NASCAR Playoffs begin and Elliott only has to focus on hitting his stride when the final 10 races begin. Pocono should be a suitable track for him to do that, as Elliott has racked up six top-10 finishes there in seven career starts. He crashed in practice leading up to the 2019 Gander RV 400, but he finished fourth after starting 32nd at Kansas earlier this season.

And a massive shocker: Brad Keselowski, one of the top Vegas favorites at 5-1, barely cracks the top five. There are far better values in a loaded 2019 NASCAR at Pocono grid.

Keselowski finished second at Pocono back in June and won this event back in 2011, but he has also finished outside the top 20 at Pocono five times. That includes a 38th-place finish in this event last season when a crash ended his day 121 laps into the race.

Despite sitting on the pole last week in New Hampshire, Keselowski had a disappointing 10th-place finish and prior to that he had finished 18th or worse in three of four starts. He's got three wins this season and is sitting in fifth in the standings, but the volatility makes him a tough play at his current price.

The model is also targeting three other drivers with 2019 NASCAR at Pocono odds of 16-1 or longer to make a serious run at winning it all. Anyone who backs these long shots could hit it big.

Kyle Busch 5-2
Brad Keselowski 5-1
Martin Truex Jr. 5-1
Kevin Harvick 5-1
Denny Hamlin 10-1
Joey Logano 14-1
Chase Elliott 16-1
Ryan Blaney 20-1
Kyle Larson 20-1
Erik Jones 20-1
Kurt Busch 25-1
Clint Bowyer 25-1
Aric Almirola 40-1
Daniel Suarez 40-1
Jimmie Johnson 50-1
Alex Bowman 50-1
William Byron 80-1

NASCAR Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 Odds: Predictions, bets and picks

The Monster Energy Cup Series heads to New Hampshire Motor Speedway Sunday afternoon for the Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Who is going to win the Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway?

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Kyle Busch (+220) will start from the second spot in Sunday’s grid, as he searches for his fourth-ever checkered flag and selfie with the giant lobster in Victory Lane at Loudon. In 27 Cup starts he has managed to finish inside the Top 10 on 11 occasions while posting an Average-Finish Position (AFP) of 12.78.

Busch’s teammate Martin Truex Jr. (+450) has also been dominant at the New England track lately. Over the past five stops he has an AFP of 7.0, running 96.2 percent of his laps inside the Top 15 while leading the pack for a circuit-best 596 laps during the span. His Driver Rating of 125.6, according to NASCAR’s Loop Data, is second behind only Busch, too. JGR’s Erik Jones (+1700) also surprised in Practice 2, topping all drivers in Best 10 Consecutive Lap Averages in Laps 26-35 at 132.854 mph, so he is one to remember.

Penske Racing’s Brad Keselowski (+450) will be searching for his second-career win at Loudon. While he has just the one win in 18 Cup tries at the flat track, he has an 11.06 AFP, which is third-best among active drivers with at least 10 career Cup starts at the Magic Mile. He also has finished inside the Top 10 in 11 of his 18 starts, or a 61.1 percentage of his runs.

Teammate Ryan Blaney (+850) might challenge his dominance, as he ranked fourth and fifth in best speed during the first two practice sessions Friday, while ranking second and first in Sessions 2 and 3 in terms of Best 10 Consecutive Lap Averages. Consistency is key, and Blaney also qualified well, notching a spot in the fifth position for Sunday’s starting grid.

New Hampshire Motor Speedway long-shot bets
Leavine Family Racing’s Matt DiBenedetto (+15000) was sharp during practice as well as qualifying, as he will go off seventh in Sunday’s race. He ranked 10th in the second practice with an average speed of 131.571 mph during laps 31-40. Roush Fenway Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (+15000) also brought the speed during qualifying at 135.723 mph, and he’ll check in 11th when the cars go off Sunday.

As far as those to avoid, Hendrick Motorsports driver Alex Bowman (+10000) will be in a backup car after mechanical issues Friday, and he starts from the 37th and final position in Sunday’s starting grid.
